The impact of cumulative socioeconomic inequalities on depression trajectories in later life

|
This study aimed to identify the cumulative impact of socioeconomic inequalities on depression trajectories in later life. The latent growth curve modeling was utilized to analyze the impact of socioeconomic disadvantages from childhood to old age on depression trajectories among 4001 older adults aged 65 and older in the Korean Welfare Panel Data from wave 1(2006) to wave 7(2012). The results indicated that socioeconomic disadvantages in childhood had cumulative effects on socioeconomic disadvantages in old age, and the cumulative socioeconomic inequalities from childhood to old age were significantly associated with higher levels of depression at baseline. However, people with a higher level of depression at baseline showed a faster decline in the rate of change in depression, indicating that the gaps in depression due to socioeconomic inequalities tend to diminish when people age. This result was further discussed by cumulative disadvantage, convergence trajectories, and paradox of well-being theories.
